Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be linked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not handled, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself a bit of time to research and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises near the end of their life. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies could notice an uptick in their symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
